FAQ's
-
Why is Kelly & Hicks different and why should I use you?We work from a purpose built studio in Tunbridge Wells and as such we don’t have High Street overheads to pass on to our customers through our charges. Our aim is to make having beautiful flowers affordable, whether these are wedding flowers, everyday flowers or sympathy tributes. Booking your flowers with us guarantees a personal touch, attention to detail, professionalism and affordability. We trust in the quality of our work and the subsequent personal recommendations. We do not believe in paying commission to venues for recommendations; another reason you’ll get more for your money.

Does it matter that I don’t know much about flowers and don’t know what I need for my wedding?Of course not and please don’t worry about this as I am here to help you every step of the way. I have worked in the floristry business for many years, initially for a wholesale flower supplier where I learnt so much about different flower varieties, their seasonal availability and durability. More recently I managed and created beautiful flowers for over 150 weddings for a busy shop in Tunbridge Wells. Combined with the numerous weddings I have conducted from my own studio, there’s not much I haven’t seen: designs of all shapes, colours, styles and sizes for intimate celebrations or extravagant affairs! So please don’t be embarrassed about asking for advice and help.
-
When should I contact you about my wedding and how much notice do you need? You are welcome to contact us at any time; in fact we are already receiving enquiries from couples for 2019 and beyond! Generally, six months to a year before your wedding is ideal as it gives us plenty of time to plan your flowers. However, if you’ve been let down by another florist or have only just made up your mind to say, ‘I do’, then we can help at short notice – simply click on 'contact us'.
-
What is your style? My style is your style. As a flexible, highly experienced florist I can provide advice and create designs which are contemporary, traditional, vintage or natural. However, if I was to choose flowers for myself, then they’d be wild and natural looking!
-
Do you book more than one wedding per day?The simple answer is no. When you book your wedding flowers with Kelly & Hicks your special day will be our sole focus to ensure we get everything perfect for you.
-
Are evening wedding consultations possible? At Kelly & Hicks we appreciate that you and your partner may be working all week and find it difficult to find time to meet with your florist. This is why we offer evening and weekend appointments, at a convenient time and location for all involved.
-
Who works for Kelly & Hicks? The business is owned and managed by me, Clare Kelly, and I’m ably assisted by a team of highly qualified and experienced freelance florists at busy times. Our driver, Mark, is highly practiced in ‘floral driving’ and fetching and carrying at event set-up. We also work with Carla Woodcock of ‘Grey Mint Marketing’ on our marketing strategies and materials. For more information and to find out who Hicks is, click on ‘About Us’.
-
What floristry qualifications do you have? When I decided to change career I retrained as a florist at Warwickshire and Hadlow Colleges. I achieved ‘Distinction’ in all modules of the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Floristry. I am also the proud holder of a City and Guilds ‘Medal of Excellence’ award for outstanding performance in the Level 3 Diploma and the only UK student to achieve that when I graduated in 2012.
-
Do you just do flowers or I can hire items too?We have a selection of glassware, candelabra, mirror plates, wooden crates, Bay trees and venue props for hire and this range is continuously expanding. Please contact us to find out more and note that if we haven't got what you are looking for we will do our very best to source items for you.
-
What happens if I change my mind about the flowers I have chosen? We work closely with you to understand and turn your dream flowers into reality however we understand that couples can change their minds, sometimes at very short notice. We will do everything we possibly can to accommodate changes, e.g. extra buttonholes, another ‘thank you’ bouquet, one more table arrangement, but the more notice we have the better, so please let us know as soon as possible.
-
What happens if you can’t get the flowers I want? This is something you shouldn’t worry about. When we discuss your order I will explain to you any risks associated with seasonal availability, any difficulties in matching particular colours and also the natural variation that can exist in flowers. I am always in close contact with my suppliers and in the extremely rare occasion when a particular flower can’t be sourced it will be substituted with the closest match – you will of course be informed so there are no surprises or disappointments on your special day.
-
Are the venue flowers ours to keep?Of course! Any flowers you have paid for are yours to keep. All arrangements are designed for you to remove and keep or give away, and this will be discussed as part of the order. Any hired glassware or equipment must be left at the venue, unless by prior agreement. Occasionally, churches may specify that flowers must be left after a wedding service and it is your responsibility as the couple getting married to negotiate this with the church.
-
What happens if the wedding is cancelled?Unfortunately, this can happen. When you book your special day with Kelly & Hicks you will receive a set of ‘Terms and Conditions’ when you pay your deposit. This document explains your rights should this nightmare happen. In summary, the deposit you pay to secure the date and booking is non-refundable. If the wedding is cancelled after full payment has been made and the flowers have been ordered and paid for, then no refund of monies is possible, but you will receive all the flowers that would have been used for your designs.
-
Are you an Interflora florist? No. Interflora certainly has its place but we offer bespoke, individual creations.
-
Is your business insured? As a professional florist with responsibilities including those of the health and safety of staff in the studio and when out delivering flowers and decorating venues, Kelly & Hicks is fully insured with £5million public liability insurance.
-
Where do you get your flowers from?We use several wholesalers to supply flowers to ensure we secure the best quality and prices. Wherever possible we try and buy from British growers and thoroughly support British Flowers Week, an annual campaign to promote British flowers and foliage (www.britishflowersweek.com). In addition, we have recently acquired a little land and will be establishing a cut flower bed and area for growing choice foliages.
-
What venues have you worked at?I have worked at and am familiar with all the main venues in and around Tunbridge Wells. If you click on ‘Venues’you’ll also see that I’m very happy to travel and have worked at venues as far away as Devon……any excuse for a delicious Devonshire cream tea!
